Sonning Common 10k Report by Justin Byworth
A second year for this friendly, new 10k in the nice little village of Sonning Common
and a second year in the club champs, so a few of us ERR’s made the trip down the A4074 on this early October Sunday morning with autumn colours just starting to show.
A fundraiser for the local primary school, we begin in the playground there with the fun of a Jane Fonda style aerobics warm up. Our small band of blue gather for a pre-race photo, amidst hellos, the normal comparison of running injuries, other races and a few last minute ‘time to play my joker’ decisions as there were only nine of us. A warm welcome for Dafydd even by Richard and Graham who could be seen discounting their club champs points tally on the spot!
It’s a good course – out through the village onto small local roads, some decent trails and a gradual ascent through woodlands before descending on country roads and the last couple of kms back into the village. Great runs by all ERRs with Dafydd flying to a strong 1st ERR finisher and category 2nd places for Kate (VF40) and Ros (VF60) – while my attempt to stay on Rhea’s heels failed as she sped away to a PB and I pondered if there was a formula for the rate of annual decline in speed with age!
I can’t blame age though for my slowness in writing up this race report prompted by the guilt of missing the deadline for the October club newsletter after the joy of winning the bottle of wine! Thanks and congrats to Dafydd, Richard, Graham, Kate, Rhea, Ros, Jane & Howard for a fine run.
